Clay Sculptures
Clay Sculpture day finally arrived yesterday for Room 6! We have been excited about this since Miss Brown told us last week.
Everyone in Room 6 went over to Rose's shed after morning tea to make a clay bowl and a clay lizard. We had to put on art shirts so our uniforms didn't get dirty.
Miss Brown let us play around with the clay first and we got to explore all the tools that we could use later on to help us make our clay creations.
After that we got to make our clay bowls, we had to pinch the clay to help make the sides. Some of us made them into nests and we put eggs inside them.
Then we made our lizards. Some of us found it really tricky to make all the different body parts that a lizard needs so we all helped each other out.
Check out the photos of us making our clay creations, we hope you enjoy them!
We even helped Miss Brown clean up! |

Domain Visit
Yesterday half of Hampstead School went down to the Domain to look at the Sculpture Symposium. We got to look around at what the sculptors were creating, play on the playground and do a scavenger hunt around the Domain.
We all piled onto buses at morning tea time and headed down to the Domain. When we got there we split into small groups and some of us went to see the sculptures and some went to the playground, then we swapped over.
When we saw the sculptures we thought they were amazing! Some of the sculptors talked to us about their work and one man even let us use some of his tools!!
Our scavenger hunt was awesome! We walked around the WHOLE Domain... well it felt like we did!
We got to eat lunch and then some of us went with Miss Brown and some of the parent helpers to go to the big flying fox!
We had an awesome day!!
Thanks again to our parent helpers for coming along :)

Rap-unzel Show
We have had a very busy start to the term here in Room 6... Athletics Day, Labour Day (yay a day off school) and the Playhouse Theatre came to present Rap-unzel to us.
It was really funny! There were heaps of characters and a girl lost her singing voice! A mean cow man took it from her and gave it to her ugly stepsister!!
Miss Brown took heaps of photos and videos, have a look below and see what we saw.

Practising for Athletics
We have been practising Athletics skills with Mark from Sports Canterbury this term and the last 2 weeks of Term 3.
We practised how to do long jump and high jump in Term 3 and then we learnt how to do shot put and discus.
Miss Brown captured some photos and videos of us doing the shot put and discus, it was really hard to push the shot put and not throw it!!
Mark is showing us how to do shot put |
And here are the kids in Room 6 giving it a go |
Nice starting position everyone! |
Now we are trying out discus... Don't hit Miss Brown!! |
Student of the Week... Again!
Hampstead School loves to celebrate children who work hard and demonstrate our school values.
Last week it was Miss Brown's turn to pick someone from Room 6 who she thought was a student that Hampstead School would be proud to have.
She chose...
Josh!!! Well done Josh, Room 6 is very proud to have you as a member of our class. :)

Technology in Room 6
Last term Room 6 did a unit on Technology. We had to follow the design process to create a magnet that was interesting to look at and held up a single sheet of paper.
We had lots of fun making different designs. We all had to plan what our magnet would look like, then we had to make it out of salt dough, bake it, paint it and put a magnet on the back.
Then it was time to test it... some of them held up a piece of paper and some didn't but all stuck to Miss Brown's whiteboard!!
Check out what our magnets looked like in the pictures below...

Room 6 are Animals...
We have been doing Collage for Art this term and this week we have been creating our final art piece.
We had to choose an animal, plan the colours it would be, rip those colours up and then start sticking them onto an outline Miss Brown gave us.
The funny part is, is that WE are the animals!! That's right, we have our faces on the animals instead of their face!!
Below are some photos of us creating the art work, check them out! To see the final product you will have to come into Room 6 to see them... They look really awesome!!!

What's the time Room 6??
In Room 6 we have been learning about Time for Maths. Last week we learnt about the days of the week and the months of the year and the order they are in.
This week we have been learning to tell the time on a clock to o'clock time.
We now know that the big hand is the minute hand, it always points to the 12 on the clock if it's o'clock time. The small hand is the hour hand and points to any number on the clock.
Check out the photos below of us making our own clock, can you tell what times we have made on them??

Māori Legends
We have been reading some Māori legends in Room 6 this term.
We have read Māui and the Sun, it was all about how Māui tried to slow down the sun so that him and his brothers could have time to gather food. After we read the legend we had to retell, to do this we wrote a sentence and then drew a picture for it.
They are up on our classroom window for everyone to see...
Another legend we have read is Tane and the Stars. This legend is about how the stars came to be in the sky.
Today we chose different musical instruments to represent the different parts of the story, watch our video below to see what we chose...

Fathers Day 2014
Today in Room 6 we found out that it was Fathers Day on Sunday... and we weren't sure if we had anything made for our dads or grandads.
So Miss Brown got us all to make a card for either our dads, grandads or mums (because they are pretty special too).
Some of us collaged the front of our cards and some of us just coloured them in, they looked really awesome!!
Have a look us getting in touch with our creative side below...

Marble Jar Rewards
In Room 6 we have a class marble jar.
We earn marbles to put in the jar when we work together really well, when we do our best singing in the mornings, when we are doing super awesome thinking and if we do a really good job tidying the class at the end of the day and get down to the mat before our clean-up song finishes.
We try to fill it up at least once a term and today we did!! So Miss Brown got Nikau to pick a marble jar reward card from the bag and he pulled out 10 minutes free time, awesome!!!
Miss Brown thought we had been working hard all morning, so before we did our writing today we had our free time. We had learnt how to play some new games yesterday so she let us play with them, check out the photos of some of us playing with them.

Homai te...
This term in Room 6 we are learning how to say classroom objects in Māori.
We have learnt HEAPS! But our favourite ones are kutikuti and pukapuka, can you guess what they might be??
*Answer is at the bottom of the post...
This week we learnt how to ask someone to pass you an object, the phrase we learnt was
'Homai te_________' this means 'Pass me the__________'
so if someone asked you 'Homai te pene hinu' they would be asking you to pass the crayon!
Check out our photos below of us practising using the phrase...
** kutikuti are scissors and pukapuka means book!!
