Orchestra Performance

Today we had a visit from the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. They played us a few songs and introduced us to their instruments.

The instruments were a viola, obo, clarinet, flute and bassoon.

At the end they played the Simpsons theme song, we loved that part!!

Here are the orchestra playing one of their songs.

Room 6 watching eagerly.

Learning about the flute.

Here's another instrument we learnt about.

Sewing

This term we have bee doing sewing for Art. We have lovely parent helpers who come in on Thursday or Friday afternoons to help... Thanks guys!!!

Miss Brown is very impressed with how well we are doing, some of us can thread our own needles and follow the pattern with almost no help!!

Here are some of us doing our final art piece, an ocean scene that has a fish, starfish and some seaweed.

Here are some the girls doing their starfishes, looking good ladies!

Josh, Alizah, Te Koha, Maria, Zayla and Nikau finishing their seaweed. Awesome job!!

Wet Day Fitness

We are an energetic lot here in Room 6 and we need to do fitness to burn off all our energy after concentrating super hard in Maths and also to stay fit and healthy.

We do exercise to lots of cool videos by the Koo Koo Kanga Roo dance team. If you search them on youtube you will find heaps of videos from them.

Miss Brown took a video of us today doing a dance, have a look at our awesome dance moves.

Making Sherbet!

This week for writing we made sherbet!

We had to follow a recipe to make it. The recipe is below...

Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp citric acid
  • 2 tsp icing sugar
  • 3 tsp jelly crystals (any flavour you like)
  • 1 tsp baking soda

Method:

Pour all the ingredients into a cup
Mix them well
Enjoy

After we made the sherbet we had to work together as a group to come up with describing words, we thought of heaps! Bubbly, sour, sweet, yucky, spicy and tasty were just some of our good ideas.
Have a look at the photos below to see how we made it...

Harrison doesn't look like he's enjoying it does he?

Mix those ingredients well!!

Milla, Indi, Reneea and Ihaka mixing their sherbet up.

Cooper and Marnel are sharing the ingredients together.

Ihaka enjoying his sherbet!

St John's Safe Kids

On Wednesday our class, along with a few members of Room 5, went to the hall to go and learn all about St John's.

We learnt lots of great information about them, what their uniform looks like, what their ambulances look like and what kind of emergency we call them for.

We know that you only call 111 if you have an emergency but never any other time as it can stop someone who really needs help from getting it.

Heather was really nice and she let us feel the mist that comes out of the oxygen and medicine tank so that we aren't scared of it if we ever have to go in the ambulance. We heard the FOUR different types of sirens the ambulance has and we even practised calling 111 (on fake phones though).

Check out our photos to see what we got up to!

We had to tell Heather the difference between the vehicles that can help us in an emergency.

This is what the new ambulances look like

We are telling Heather who to call for this emergency

This emergency needed the police, ambulance AND fire truck!!

This is a special clip that hooks up to a screen to show our heart beat

Some of us got to feel what it was like... We weren't even a little bit scared!

The oxygen tank that mixes the oxygen and the medicine to help us when we are sick

We got to feel what it was like

It felt like a cold mist

Listening to the sirens, they were loud!!!

Practising dialling 111... you say 1, go, 1, go, 1. That helps to not dial too fast!

1...go...1...go...1

Harrison is calling for help, Charlotte broke her arm!

We all got a turn to practise!

I wonder what Ihaka's emergency was?

Angus McKay Visit

This term for topic we have been learning about Leadership.

We have been talking about what makes a good leader, who the leaders are in our school, community and country.

Yesterday the Mayor of Ashburton, Angus Mckay came to visit Hampstead School.

He spoke to us about what he does as the mayor and we got to ask him some questions about why he is a leader and how he became a leader.

Angus McKay talking to students about his role as the Mayor.

Some members of Room 6 listening to Angus's talk.

The Impossible Bridge: Hampstead Edition

This week the Dolphins reading group read a story called 'The Impossible Bridge' during guided reading.

The teacher in the book got the children to build all kinds of bridges: beam bridges, arch bridges and suspension bridges.

Then they were to make a bridge using just cardboard... they said it was impossible! Miss Brown was a bit easier on us and we got to make it out of cardboard, tape, straws and things around the classroom.

Have a look below to see the bridges the dolphins reading groups made...

Ma is white, Whero is Red...

This term we are learning the colours in Maori, we know heaps now and are getting much better at naming them without having to sing the song!

Today we had a treasure hunt to find things around our room that were different colours...

We had to find something that was: kakariki, whero, kowhai, karaka, poroporo, mawhero and mangu/pongo. We did really well!

Below are the photos of what we found...

Fruit, Glorious Fruit!!!

Last week we were super lucky because we got some yummy free fruit to eat! We got to choose between mandarins and apples and they were really yummy.

So as Miss Brown read us a story we munched away on our fruit, here's a photo of us enjoying it...

Thanks for the fruit!! It was so yummy!!

Cross Country 2014

Earlier this term we completed our school cross country. It was a lovely sunny day but after many days of run the field had turned REALLY muddy!

We all managed to run it without getting too dirty... Our Mum's and Dad's were pretty happy about that!!!

We got to run with our buddy class, Room 9! Check out some of our photos from the day below...
Room 6 lined up waiting to be called to run...

Student Council 2014

That time of year has rolled around again! We had to nominate someone from our class to be our student council representative.

As a class we came up with a list of things that we thought a student council member should have or be, here are some of our ideas...

  • Kind and caring
  • Honest
  • Considerate
  • Listens to others
  • Has good ideas
  • Is responsible
  • Shares with others
And many more! We all voted and our class decided that...

Milla should be our student council representative!

Well done Milla, you deserve it and have been doing a great job so far!

Student of the Week!

This week we celebrate Maria for being Student of the Week!

She is always kind and caring, always has something nice to say and tries her hardest when she is learning.

Well done Maria! Enjoy all your treats :)

Strike Percussion

During the last week of Term 1 we had an amazing performance by Strike Percussion. They had heaps of different drums and other percussion instruments.

It was really strange because they were all called Tom! But luckily they had nicknames so we could tell them apart.

They did heaps of awesome songs and even got some of the teachers and students to come and help them perform.

The end was SO cool because they turned off all the lights, lit some fire sticks and blew methylated spirits onto them with spray bottles and performed a song with those… Awesome!!!
